Kansas HIV Prevention Funding Cut

To the Friends and Community of DCAP,

In the last few days, DCAP and all HIV prevention providers in the state, have received notice from the State of Kansas that much of the Federal grant resources for prevention services are being shifted to areas of the country with the highest burden of disease.  This reflects a trend that began a few years ago, but is to be accelerated in the coming three years.  In many ways the low level of HIV/AIDS disease presence in Kansas is something we can be grateful for, but it does mean Kansas is one of the states that will see significant reductions in funding.  For the State of Kansas this means a loss of $935,175 over the next 3 years, a 46% reduction in overall funding.

At this time, the state does not yet know specifics regarding agencies and organizations that will be most affected.  We must, however, anticipate that the core grant funding for DCAP will be changing.  Over the next few weeks, as we await more detail from the state HIV programs; the board of directors and staff of DCAP will be considering all of the options that must be considered with these potential funding changes.  We will be looking toward other funding sources, to changes in services and means of delivery and creative ways to preserve services in Douglas, Jefferson and Franklin counties.

During this time, we will continue to provide services to our community and consumers.  We also ask for your support and input in defining the desires and needs of the community for HIV/AIDS related service.
